AI ADVOCATE
AI Lawyer in your Pocket

Terms of Service

AI Advocate ("we", "us", "the App") provides AI-powered general legal information. By using the App, you agree to these terms.

1. Not legal advice (Unauthorised Practice of Law)

AI Advocate is an information service, NOT a regulated legal practice. The AI is not a solicitor, barrister, or qualified lawyer. Nothing in the App creates a solicitor-client relationship, and no information provided by the AI is "legal advice" within the meaning of the Legal Services Act 2007 (England & Wales), the Solicitors (Scotland) Act 1980, the Solicitors (Northern Ireland) Order 1976, or equivalent legislation in your country. For binding legal advice on your specific case, instruct a regulated solicitor (SRA in England & Wales; LSS in Scotland; LSNI in Northern Ireland; equivalent body in your country). The AI's responses are general legal information, not advice on your case.

2. Eligibility & age

You must be 18 or older to use AI Advocate. The signup flow requires you to confirm this; signing up while under 18 is a breach of these terms and we will terminate the account on discovery. The app is rated 17+ on the App Store and "Mature" on Google Play.

3. AI accuracy & hallucinations

Large Language Models (including those that power Lex) can produce inaccurate, outdated, incomplete, or fabricated information ("hallucinations"), including invented case citations and statute references. We make no representation or warranty that any output is accurate, current, complete, applicable to your jurisdiction, or fit for any purpose. You must independently verify every legal proposition with a qualified solicitor before relying on it. You bear the risk of acting on AI output and we are NOT liable for any loss, damage, claim or cost arising from your reliance on AI responses.

4. Recording features

The App provides audio-recording features (Hearing Recorder, Record Legal Interaction, Live Legal Assist, Translation Mode). Recording laws vary by country and setting. You — not AI Advocate — are responsible for the legality of any recording you make. Recording in a courtroom is a criminal offence in the UK (Contempt of Court Act 1981 s.9) and most countries.

⚠️ Two-party-consent jurisdictions: Several US states (California, Florida, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Washington and others) and most of the EU (Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy) make it a criminal offence to record a private conversation without the consent of all parties. The UK allows one-party consent for personal use, but if you travel abroad with the app, you are solely responsible for verifying that recording is lawful in your physical location at the time. We provide no warranty as to lawfulness outside the United Kingdom.

4a. Live Legal Assist & "Whisper Mode" (AI-assisted listening)

Live Legal Assist captures short audio chunks, transcribes them via OpenAI Whisper, and routes them to an AI model for short tactical suggestions. "Whisper Mode" reads these suggestions aloud through your device (e.g. AirPods). The AI is a tool, NOT a legal representative — it does not create solicitor-client privilege and its advice is not protected legal counsel. You agree:

4b. Translation Mode

Translation Mode is a bidirectional live interpreter powered by Whisper (speech-to-text) and Claude (translation). It is for travellers, expats, and migrants in everyday foreign-language conversations. You agree:

4c. Cross-border data flow

The App is operated from the United Kingdom but routes AI requests to providers in the UK, EU, and US. By using the App outside the UK you acknowledge that your audio, transcripts, and chat content may transit and be processed in jurisdictions other than your own. You remain responsible for the lawfulness of using AI assistance, recording, and translation in the jurisdiction where you are physically located.

4d. Emergency SOS & Live Location Tracking

⚠️ AI ADVOCATE IS NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR EMERGENCY SERVICES. ALWAYS CALL 999 (UK), 112 (EU), 911 (US/CA), or your country's equivalent first if you are in immediate danger. The Emergency SOS button is a supplementary tool for alerting your personal contacts and (where enabled) opted-in solicitor firms; it is not a relay to police, fire, ambulance or coastguard. Battery, signal, OS background restrictions, and third-party SMS gateways may delay or prevent delivery — never rely on SOS for life-safety alone.

The Emergency SOS button records an event server-side and (where you have enabled it) pings the nearest opted-in solicitor firms. Tapping it ALSO opens your phone's native SMS / email composer pre-filled with your stored contacts and a live-location link — these messages are sent over your own mobile network, from your own number, at your network's standard SMS rates. AI Advocate does not relay or read those messages.

When you fire an SOS, the App will share your live GPS position with the people who hold the SMS link for a window you select in Settings (default 1 hour, maximum 24 hours). This life-safety feature is available on every tier — we do not paywall the ability to be found. The lawful basis under UK GDPR Article 6(1)(d) is vital interests — you have actively triggered the SOS yourself. You may stop the sharing at any time from the in-app banner. Location data is retained for 30 days as a safety audit log and then deleted.

The covert smartwatch trigger only fires a server-side event and (if enabled) the firm-standby ping. It cannot send SMS to your family contacts — that requires your phone. Keep your watch-trigger URL private; anyone with that URL can fire an SOS in your name.

5. Vault

The Lex Vault uses end-to-end encryption with a PIN that only you know. If you lose your PIN, your vault items are PERMANENTLY UNRECOVERABLE. We do not hold a copy.

6. Subscriptions, free trial, cooling-off & auto-renewal

Free 7-day trial of paid features on signup. Paid plans renew automatically at £19.99/mo (Plus), £34.99/mo (Pro), or £319.99/yr (Yearly Pro). All prices include UK VAT where applicable.

14-day cooling-off period: Under the UK Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, you have a statutory right to cancel any paid subscription within 14 days of first signup and receive a full refund — even if you have started using the paid features. To exercise this right, email support@aiadvocate.co.uk within 14 days; we will refund within 14 days of receipt. Note that by starting your subscription you agree we may begin providing the service immediately, which means if you cancel after using paid features for more than 14 days, you waive the cooling-off right.

Cancellation: You may cancel at any time at least 24 hours before the next renewal date. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. Refunds for partial periods are at our discretion outside the 14-day window.

Renewal reminders: Per the UK Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, you will receive an email reminder before each annual renewal. Apple App Store and Google Play also send their own renewal reminders for store-managed subscriptions.

How to cancel: Web subscribers — Settings → Manage Subscription. App Store subscribers — Apple ID → Subscriptions. Google Play subscribers — Play Store → Subscriptions. Refunds for store-managed subscriptions follow the relevant store's refund policy.

6a. One-time Top-up packs

In addition to subscriptions, we offer time-limited one-time Top-up packs (e.g. Day Pass, Letter Pack, Weekend Pass, Crisis Pack). Top-ups are not auto-renewing subscriptions, are paid by single Stripe charge or in-app purchase, and grant temporary upgraded access for the duration shown on the purchase screen (e.g. 24 hours, 72 hours, or a single letter generation). Unused time does not roll over.

Refunds on Top-ups: Top-ups deliver digital content that begins immediate performance on purchase. Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 Regulation 36, by purchasing you expressly consent to immediate performance and acknowledge that this waives your 14-day right of withdrawal in respect of any portion of the digital content already supplied. You may still request a discretionary refund within 24 hours if you have not yet used the upgraded feature; thereafter Top-ups are non-refundable except where required by law.

6b. Promotional credits, complimentary access & Winback grants

From time to time we may grant complimentary access (free Pro, Winback Day Pass, founding-cohort grants, customer-service goodwill credits). All such grants are promotional: they are non-transferable, hold no cash value, cannot be combined with other offers, and may be revoked or withdrawn by us at any time without notice. Promotional access does not vest you with any contractual right to continued service.

7. Misuse

You may not use the App for: harassment, illegal recording, defamation, doxing, or building tools that compete with the App.

8. Termination

We may suspend accounts that violate these terms. You may delete your account at any time via Settings → Manage My Data.

9. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability to you in any 12-month period is capped at the greater of (a) £100 or (b) the subscription fees you paid us in that period.

10. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England & Wales. Disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts, unless your local consumer-protection law provides otherwise.

11. Sponsored firms & advertising disclosure

The "Find a lawyer" directory contains both organic listings (free regulated firms we have verified) and sponsored listings (firms that pay for placement under our Featured / Premium / Practice tiers). Sponsored listings carry a visible "Sponsored" badge and ranking. We do not manipulate sponsored placement based on Lex's recommendations to any individual user, and Lex itself is not paid by any law firm. Rankings within a tier are determined by recency, geography, response rate, and user feedback — never by amount paid above the tier price. All sponsored firms must be regulated by the SRA, LSS, LSNI, or equivalent foreign regulator and provide a valid registration number.

12. Data protection, ICO registration & company details

This service is provided by AI Advocate Ltd. (Company No. 16612244, registered in England & Wales), which is registered with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) as a data controller under the Data Protection Act 2018. Registration number: ZC158457 (verifiable at ico.org.uk/ESDWebPages/Search). Our Privacy Policy is available at /privacy.html and describes the data we collect, the lawful bases we rely on, our retention periods, cross-border transfer safeguards, and how to exercise your UK-GDPR rights (access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, objection, automated-decision review). A Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) has been completed for the SOS Live Tracking, Vault, audio-recording, and AI profiling features.

14. Sample / Demo mode

The App offers a "Try a sample case" entry point that signs you into a shared demonstration account seeded with a fictional Unfair Dismissal matter. Demo mode is intended for App Store reviewers, journalists, and curious visitors to experience the product without creating a personal account. You acknowledge and agree that:

15. Feedback & user-submitted suggestions

If you submit a suggestion, feature request, bug report, or any other feedback through the App (including the "Missing a legal area?" form), you grant AI Advocate a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to use, reproduce, adapt, modify, publish, translate, and incorporate that feedback into the App or any future product, without compensation, attribution, or further notice. You confirm that the feedback is your own original contribution and does not infringe any third party's rights. You may withdraw your right to be contacted about your feedback at any time by emailing support@aiadvocate.co.uk.

16. Abuse prevention & signup integrity

To protect the service from automated farming, disposable-email abuse, and other malicious activity, we apply the following abuse-prevention measures. We disclose them here for transparency under PECR and the UK GDPR principle of fair processing:

17. Native App Store & Google Play terms

If you download the iOS or Android app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, those stores' own end-user licence agreements (EULAs) and payment terms also apply in addition to these Terms. In particular: refunds for in-app subscriptions and one-time top-ups purchased through Apple or Google are governed by Apple's or Google's published refund policies, not ours. You will need to seek those refunds directly through the relevant store.
